Ralph
Ralph is an athletic boy with amazing leadership qualities. He had the smarts and the determination to refocus the boys so
that they could all stategize on ways to get off of the island. He was a parental figure to the lilluns and a dynamic leader.
While influential, Ralph inevitably is unsuccesful in his attempts to bring the group together. While his position of authority
declines, Jack rises in power on the island and slowly boys start turning to Jack's tribe. Ralph is a thinker and the boys
want a warrior. Ralph looks down on the transformation of the boys on the island. He sees the evil the boys have devoloped
and is hopeless by the end of the book. His role in the book ends semi-tragically when he weeps at the sight of the naval
officer while fully grasping the change in the boys on the island.
Jack
Jack is an ego maniac and extremly strong
willed. He constantly is yearning for power throughout the book and turnes barbaric very soon in the book. He also enables
a good majority of the boys on the island to also be barbaric and turn into animal-like people. He constrantly tests the boundaries
of Ralph while turning more barbaric by the second. He eventually becomes obsessed with hunting and becomes a blood thirsty
warrior while bringing many of the boys on the island to the dark side. In the end it is virtually his tribe versus Ralph.
Piggy
Piggy is Ralph's side kick and his right hand mand throughout the book. He is a pudgy boy with good ideas
and a willingness to survive and not let himself and others become barbaric. He constantly is focusing on innovation and the
wroking toward the goal of being rescued along with Ralph. He represents the rational side of humans. He doesn't let the island
get into he psyche and is constantly working toward some type of unity on the island. He often speaks through Ralph because
he is not taken seriously by others on the island because of his physical appearance.
