Reason vs. Instinct
Jack represents instinct  with his constant need to hunt while Ralph and Piggy represent reason because of there constant attempts to do things that would help them be saved.Jack destroys order on the island and converts many of the boys to his side. As the book goes on Jack turnes into somewhat of a savage because he becomes obsessed with hunting, wears a loin cloth, and lets his hair grow long like an animal. Jack developes animal instincts and becomes completly savage by the end of the book. This is seen in the way he ends up hunting Ralph in the last chapter.

While Jack is savage, Piggy and Ralph use reason and hope to define their existance on the island. They are constantly searching for ways to get off the island and how to survive on the island. They develope huts and a fire to help aid them in doiunteng this.

Religion
Religion is one of the first things that is developed on the island. The indirect fear of the beastie parallels to religion. The beastie, although never seen, is feared by many and influences a lot of activity on the island. Jack's troop is effected by the fear of the beastie. Fear of the beastie enables Jack's troop to become even more obsessed with hunting. Simon questions the beastie's existence and represents many people in society that also question religion. The beastie is a main element that effects a lot of behavior on the island.
